CREATED:20250627T214035
SUMMARY:Transgenerational Justice for Native Plants, Animals and People, A Talk by Christopher Telomen
LOCATION:Sunnyvale Library Program Room\, 665 W. Olive Ave.\, Sunnyvale
DESCRIPTION:Note: This talk may be presented in person or on Zoom (TBD). Check the Chap
ter weekly email news for updates. Please visit www.cnps-scv.org/stay-in-to
uch (https://www.cnps-scv.org/stay-in-touch) for how to subscribe.\nNative
plants, animals and people deserve to live their lives in dignity and healt
h on the land where they belong, with familiar care and in transgenerationa
l community. Focusing on straight-species, locally-native plants and materi
al support for indigenous people, we will explore how each/all of us can ta
ke accountability for the history of native plants, animals and people in s
o-called California, and build on our current conditions to create more opp
ortunities for habitat and community in the future.\nThroughout the talk, p
hotos and lessons will be drawn from recently-installed native gardens and
projects. We will end with a walkthrough of how to design, install and main
tain your own beginner-friendly, locally-native, straight-species habitat g
arden.\nEducational handouts, resources and a list of helpful local organiz
ations will be provided and a brief Q&A will follow.\nChristopher Telom
en (they/any) is a white, queer, trans/NB, chronically ill, and ADHD Califo
rnia native habitat care worker. They design, install and maintain native g
ardens around the so-called San Francisco Bay Area on stolen indigenous lan
d. Their work is necessarily intersectional, incorporating frameworks of po
llinator relationships, sustainable material sourcing, invasive plant manag
ement, white supremacy, disability, settler-colonialism, land back, climate
change, immigration and poverty. They center indigenous people, plants, an
d animals in their work and they provide sliding scale services for people
who need them.\n
