SUMMARY:The Diversity of Mariposa Lilies Explained Through a Genetics Lens a talk by Dr. Adriana Hernandez
LOCATION:Los Altos Library Orchard Room\, 13 S. San Antonio Rd.\, Los Altos
DESCRIPTION:Under natural selection, plant traits often become homogeneous, but how exa
ctly that happens is not well understood. What mechanisms shape and maintai
n gene flow? How does trait variation occur and how is it \nmaintained acro
ss generations and heterogeneous landscapes?\nJasper Ridge scientist Dr. Ad
riana Hernandez has developed Mariposa lilies (Calochortus sp.) as a model
system to investigate the evolution of strikingly diverse floral traits. Sh
e uses the highly variable California native species Calochortus venustus t
o identify and interpret the evolutionary significance of geographical patt
erns of floral trait variation, genetic diversity, range evolution and the
genetic mechanisms underlying climatic adaptation. Her work utilizes compar
ative methods from population genetics and genomics to identify candidate g
enes that may be responsible for the morphological diversity observed in th
is plant.\nCome to this talk to deepen your knowledge of this beautiful pla
nt from a scientific perspective.\nDr. Adriana Hernandez is a population bi
ologist who studies the evolution and ecology of California native plants.
Her work leverages natural history collections and comparative genomic tech
niques to help understand the patterns, processes, and mechanisms that driv
e and maintain biodiversity across the California landscape. Through commun
ity science and outreach projects, she also aims to make the botanical scie
nces more accessible to diverse communities.\n
