SUMMARY:Poaching of Cedros Island Dudleya
LOCATION:Los Altos Library Program Room 13 S. San Antonio Road\, Los Altos
DESCRIPTION:Siemprevive de Isla de Cedros (Dudleya pachyphytum [Crassulaceae]) is the m
ost intriguing and charismatic Dudleya species and it is also one of the ra
rest. It occupies a small, very specialized portion of only one island in t
he Pacific off the coast of Baja California, Mexico on Isla de Cedros. It i
s now ever closer to being extirpated as a group of poachers removed a huge
portion of our entire global population. In the final days of May 2017, Me
xican authorities performing a routine search of a 55-foot long freightline
r tractor trailer rig in Baja California discovered a profound illegal ship
ment. In the enclosed trailer they counted 64 cardboard boxes loaded with a
total of 4,756 rosettes of the extremely rare plant. \nFour perpetrators w
ere subsequently arrested in connection with this large-scale smuggling act
and the rosettes are now, thankfully, in safe hands. What percentage of th
e entire population does this represent and can the planned repatriation ev
er return this population to its former health? Michael Uhler traveled to t
he crime scene to view first-hand the site of this unconscionable act and t
o determine the answers to the above questions.\nMichael Uhler has been a G
ardener at Tilden Botanic Garden for 13 years. Michael has been seeking wil
d places his entire life, and Isla de Cedros is his favorite wild place in
Baja California. Michael invites you to share his favorite images from this
insular treasure as well as a tragic tale of loss related to Dudleya pachy
 phytum. \n
