SUMMARY:Gardening for Biodiversity with Native Plants, a talk by Shelkie Tao
LOCATION:Zoom and YouTube
DESCRIPTION:Native gardens provide so many benefits. They are beautiful, low water, low
maintenance and support a wide variety of wildlife. A major advantage of n
ative gardens is that they can be a great place to help us preserve biodive
rsity. \nCalifornia is a hotspot of biodiversity: it “is home (https://cali
 forniabiodiversityinitiative.org/pdf/california-biodiversity-action-plan.pd
 f) to more species of plants and animals than any other state, and is home
to about one third of all species found in the United States, including mor
e rare plants than most states have plants.”  However, “More than 30% (http
s://wildlife.ca.gov/biodiversity) of California’s species are threatened wi
th extinction.”\nThe good news is that our gardens can help restore and pre
serve biodiversity. By planting a wide variety of native plants, including
those that are facing extinction, native plant gardens can support plant bi
odiversity while supporting a large number of insects, pollinators and othe
r forms of wildlife.  In this meeting, Shelkie will talk about the biodiver
sity benefits of native plants, and go through some of the plants she uses
in the gardens she designed.\nShelkie Tao is landscape designer and founder
  of WaterEfficientGardens.com (https://waterefficientgardens.com/), an onli
ne landscape design business that excels in low water and native plant gard
en designs. She is a sustainability-driven entrepreneur committed to develo
ping water-saving and ecosystem-friendly solutions.  Prior to Water Efficie
nt Gardens, Shelkie worked over 10 years in the high tech industry in Silic
on Valley.  She received her Certificate of Achievement in Environmental Ho
rticulture and Design from Foothill College, and MBA from the Anderson Scho
ol at UCLA.\nThis talk will be live streamed on YouTube (https://www.youtub
 e.com/c/CNPSSantaClaraValley) and Zoom (https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/reg
 ister/tZcqde6oqjsiGtyIW2Py_wT_amKqgrhytnML) (requires advance registration)
