Native Plant ID (fo
rmerly Keying with Natives) is a Chapter group that works together to learn
plant identification using botanical keys and other resources. Join us as
we look at plant samples collected from local gardens and practice methods
of identifying the native plants of our region. Feel free to bring in plant
samples if you have some from property where you have permission to collec
t or just come and work with the materials provided. We use the current edi
tion of The Jepson Manual as well as other plant guides, and we ha
ve copies to share. The Chapter has 10x hand lenses that we can use to
look at small plant parts or bring your own lens. Also bring any reference
books that you like to use.
On Tuesday, January 27, Bruce Homer-Smith will present an introduction to plants of the redwo od forest. Bring samples of redwood forest plants that you are interes ted in identifying from property where you have permission to collect. We are planning a follow-up field trip at a date to be determined aft er the class.
At our Tuesday, February 24 session w e will revisit the genus Arctostaphylos (manzanitas) and hop efully schedule a field trip to look at some Arctostaphy los in the field. Any species (preferably not hybrid) Arctostap hylos samples will be appreciated for that session.
The group meets at 7:00pm on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Join other nativ e plant enthusiasts in a fun and educational atmosphere, as we hone our ski lls at plant identification (aka “keying”).

Directions to the PCC: From Hwy. 101 take the San Antonio R d. exit and head north. Take the next left onto East Bayshore, which will c urve left then right. Take the next right onto Corporation Way. The entranc e to the PCC parking lot is the first driveway on the left. The conference rooms are on the first floor.
