Butterflies are often called the “winged jewels of the garden,” and they do indeed add sparkle to our yards. California has almost 70 species of butterflies that you can attract to your garden by growing a variety of native plants which will provide nectar and habitat. Hear how one couple transformed their typical suburban garden into a moth and butterfly haven, and a Monarch butterfly way station.
Paul and Harmina Mansur filled in the pool of their back yard and transformed the seemingly sterile lot into a garden abundant with moths, butterflies, and caterpillars. Their garden has been featured in the April 2010 issue of the local magazine Bay Nature and in Nancy Bauer’s book The California Wildlife Habitat. They have been opening their garden every other year to the Going Native Garden Tour since 2010.
